Villarreal beat United to win Europa League

Goalkeeper David de Gea missed the decisive penalty in an epic shootout as Villarreal beat Manchester United 11-10 to win the Europa League.

Edinson Cavani had reacted quickly to drive in a loose ball in the area and draw United level in the 55th minute after Spaniard Gerard Moreno prodded home a Daniel Parejo free-kick to give the Yellow Submarines the lead.

United peppered the Villarreal goal but were unable to find he winner, with Marcus Rashford wasting the best chance of the match, fluffing his lines from a Mason Greenwood centre.

With the game tied at 1-1 after extra time, both sides converted their first 10 penalties meaning the goalkeepers had to step up and take the 11th spot-kicks.

Geronimo Rulli was the hero, firing his penalty beyond De Gea before keeping out the Spain international’s low effort to hand Villarreal their first Europa League trophy.
