VAT: ‘Oyo to act soon’ – Makinde

The Oyo State government  has stated that it is still evaluating the ruling of the court which asserted that the Rivers state government had the right to collect Value Added Tax (VAT) from organisations and individuals in the state.

Taiwo Adisa, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State stated this in reaction to the court judgment on Rivers.

The Rivers State Government, through the State Attorney General, had challenged the collection of VAT by the Federal Government in court.

Adisa has, however, said the state government, having taken delivery of the judgment is still evaluating the ruling before proceeding on a course of action.

“If you look at what they are doing in Lagos and Rivers states, they domesticated the law,” he said.

“Rivers state went to court, they got a judgment, it passed through processes.

“Lagos State has studied the judgment and has passed it into law.

“So, Oyo State is also taking delivery of the judgment and the ministry of justice and finance are evaluating the ruling.

“So, they will advise the government at the appropriate time once they conclude the evaluation.

“Oyo State will follow the process of the law based on the advice of the ministry of justice before it takes any step on the collection of VAT”.
