Uncertainty as reports claim Gernot Rohr has been sacked by NFF

A cloud of uncertainty hovers over Nigerian football with online news platforms reporting that Gernot Rohr has been dismissed as head coach of the Nigerian national football team.

Unconfirmed reports claim the German was sacked despite his team scraping into Africa’s 2022 World Cup play-offs.

The three-time African champions finished top of Group C after an underwhelming 1-1 with Cape Verde in Lagos on Tuesday.

This led to a string of criticisms from ex-internationals, officials, fans and the media, with many of the view that the team won’t be able to cross the final hurdle to the Mundial.

Meanwhile, influential journalist Colin Udoh of ESPN wrote on Twitter that Rohr hasn’t been fired but told to resign.

Rohr was appointed head coach of the Super Eagles in August 2016 and led the team to a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
