Sterling strike gives England 1-0 win over Croatia

England began their Euro 2020 campaign with a 1-0 win over Croatia courtesy of Raheem Sterling’s 57th minute goal at Wembley.

Manchester City winger Sterling repaid England manager Gareth Southgate’s faith in him, sliding in the winner following a through ball from the impressive Kalvin Phillips.

The Three Lions almost took an early lead when Phil Foden struck the upright, while Philips had a superb volley saved by the Croatia goalie as the hosts made a lively start.

Sterling’s goal came with the match fairly balanced, and moments later England captain Harry Kane saw a far post effort go wide after good work down the left by Sterling and Mason Mount.

England Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was barely tested by a disappointing Croatia side, as the Three Lions take three points into Friday’s second Group D game against Scotland at Wembley.
