Head coach Gernot Rohr has expressed confidence the Super Eagles will replicate their 2021 AFCON qualifying feat when the race for the 2022 FIFA World Cup kick-off in June this year.
The Eagles secured qualification for the 2021 AFCON with two games to spare last weekend before they beat Benin Republic 1-0 in Porto Novo.
In the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, the Eagles are in Group C with Cape Verde, Central African Republic and Liberia.
And following their impressive run in the AFCON qualifiers, where they won four and drew two games, Rohr is optimistic of another good outing from his players.
“The World Cup qualifiers will start soon and I think we will be able to do well,” the German coach said.
“Nigerians should expect good football again and on a good pitch I hope. Lagos did very well but they still have to improve especially in the area of traffic.
“It’s going to be a serious World Cup qualification. The record of our results are very good and I know we were unbeaten in all our away games (during the AFCON qualifiers) which is wonderful and very nice.
“We have to continue because we want to be always the best but at the same time you can’t win all your matches.”
Reflecting on his Eagles game against Lesotho, the 66-yrear-old said: “The result of our last match against Lesotho was a good result. To win 3-0 is always a good result without conceding a goal we wanted to become more solid after our two games in November and now we did two clean sheets which is very good for the stability of the team, for the balance of the team. Also scoring three goals which did not come from setpiece is also very interesting.”
