Mixed reactions as Obasanjo kneels before 36-yr-old Olu of Warri

Nigerians were stunned recently when ex-President, Olusegun Obasanjo was spotted his kneeling as he paid homage to the new Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.

The newly crowned monarch of the Itsekiri Kingdom is the son of the 19th Olu Atuwatse II, Godwin Toritseju Emiko and Gladys Durorike Emiko.

Obasanjo’s gesture toward the monarch, who is just 36, has however triggered mixed reactions on social media.

Some hailed the 84-year-old former president for his display of humility, while others allege that there was an ulterior motive behind the move.

A Facebook user identified as Mazi Nwachinemelu said, “His oil well is in Warri na. What do you expect? Oga is protecting his business.”

@ENIBOY said, “84 year Old Obasanjo kneels before 37-year-old Olu of Warri. The beauty of tradition. The Itsekiris are Yoruba in spirit, says Prince Yemi Emiko, a younger brother of the immediate past Olu of Warri. They also share ancestry with the Bini people. Long live Ogiame Atuwatse III.”

Another Facebooker, Justice Oghogho thinks that “OBJ is a wise man n rugged politician. Always want to protect his own interest.# Petty politics”

@IdorenyinEtuk5 added, “One thing I learn with admiration from Obj is his open respect for authority irrespective of who seats in authority, just the same way he would rebuke openly those who abuse the authority trusted to them. He is not perfect but this is something I admire.”
