Spanish giants Barcelona have sent birthday greetings to talismanic captain Lionel Messi as he turned 34 on Thursday.
There was the usual outpouring of warmth towards Messi in the social media posts by Barcelona, with a highlight reel of his 10 best goals for the Catalans.
The tribute comes with Messi on duty with national side Argentina in the Copa America duty in Brazil.
A six-time ballon d’Or winner, Messi is Barcelona’s record goalscorer and has made more appearances for the club than any other player, sweeping a duffel bag of individual honours in the process.
Both parties – Messi and Barca – seem to have moved on from the saga over his bid to leave the club in 2020 after he activated a clause in his contract in the wake of their humiliating Champions league exit to Bayern Munich.
His future however remains in doubt as his contract at the Camp Nou expires this summer.
He finished as top scorer in La Liga with 30 goals and helped Barcelona win a record-extending 30th Copa del Rey crown under new boss Ronald Koeman.
New Barca President Juan Laporta has made keeping Messi his priority, and believes the mercurial Argentinian will continue his glittering career with the Blaugrana.
