A lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, Dr Jones Ayauwo, who was kidnapped in Rivers by unknown gunmen three weeks ago, has regained his freedom.
This comes days after his students, particularly those in the Department of Linguistics and Communication, appealed for his unconditional release.
A spokesman for the University, Sammy Kpenu, who confirmed his release on Tuesday morning, said the lecturer regained his freedom on Monday night and has since reunited with his family and the university community, Punch writes.
“The management of the University has already contacted his family and thanked God for his release.
“This morning there was a special service to celebrate his release in Our Favours Chapel (the university:s church), In fact, when he was released, he went to the church to give glory to God.”
The Rivers State police command has remained mum on whether any ransom was paid to secure the release of the lecturer.
