Iheanacho provides assist as Saints hold Leicester

Kelechi Iheanacho provided his sixth assist of the season as 10-man Southampton held Leicester to a 1-1 draw and frustrate the Foxes in their push for a top-four finish.

Southampton’s Jannick Vestergaard was sent off after just 10 minutes when his tackle on Jamie Vardy was deemed to have denied the Leicester striker a goal-scoring opportunity.

That decision set the game’s pattern with Leicester probing while Southampton defended deep, but it was the Saints who took the lead in the 61st minute.

Ward-Prowse scored from the penalty spot after Iheanacho had inadvertently blocked Stuart Armstrong’s effort with his raised arm.

Brendan Rodgers’ men however drew level eight minutes later thanks to Jonny Evans who headed in Iheanacho’s pinpoint cross.

Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy brilliantly denied Vardy with his right boot from close range, while he also did well to deflect Iheanacho’s late header for a corner.

The point means Leicester remain in third position on 63 points and are five points ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea who host Fulham on Saturday.

Southampton meanwhile, move 10 points clear of the relegation zone as they close in on guaranteeing their safety in the top flight.
