Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State on Wednesday renamed the Heroes Square in the heart of Owerri, the state capital, after the first Military Administrator (MILAD) of the state, the late Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu.
This happened as the body of the revered naval officer was lying in state at the Government House in Owerri.
Uzodimma said the late Kanu impacted positively on the state’s economy and infrastructure, and the country at large.
While renaming the Heroes Square after the deceased naval officer, he said the decision was reached after due consultation and application of the Executive Order given his office.
The governor recalled that the late officer was instrumental to the return of democracy, following his dogged involvement in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).
He commiserated with the Kanu family for the irreparable loss and asked God to console them.
Admiral Kanu’s body was brought to the town by a Nigeria Air Force (NAF) jet.
Some of the family members at the airport to receive the late officer’s body included Ms. Simone Nnenna Abiona and Kelly Ndubuisi Kanu.
In his funeral oration, Kelly Ndubuisi Kanu said his father left a huge shoe that might be difficult for any of his children to wear.
But he promised that the children would “try their very best and, with God’s guidance, not to disappoint” their late father.
