Ex-Minister, Mama Taraba, dies at 61

Nigeria’s former minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha-Jummai Alhassan, also known as ‘Mama Taraba’, is dead.

Suleiman Dantsoho, her former media aide, announced news of her death, saying she died at a Cairo hospital on Friday afternoon. She was 61.

Alhassan, fondly referred to as ‘Mama Taraba’, was appointed minister in 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari to represent Taraba State after losing the 2015 governorship election to Darius Ishaku.

She resigned as the minister on July 27, 2018 after the ruling APC screening committee disqualified her from the 2019 governorship primaries.

The Jalingo-born politician later declared support for Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 general elections, saying he was her political godfather.
