Euro 2020: Germany survive Hungary scare, Portugal squeeze through

Leon Goretzka scored late on to salvage a 2-2 draw for Germany against Hungary on Wednesday night as the Euro 2020 group stages came to a nail-biting finish.

Hungary looked like they would shock their hosts and send them out of the tournament after Adam Szalai’s diving header in the 11th minute opened the scoring.

Kai Havertz eventually drew Germany level in the 66th minute, only for Hungary to retake the lead seconds after the re-start as Andras Schaefer ran onto a pass and headed in past Manuel Neuer.

Substitute Goretzka bagged the crucial equaliser in the 84th minute to send Germany through in second place behind France in Group F on four points.

The Germans had close to 70% possession in the first half and Mats Hummels hit the crossbar with a powerful header, but other than that they showed little of the attacking spark they demonstrated in their 4-2 win over Portugal.

Joachim Loew’s Germany will now go up against England in a mouth-watering round of 16 match against at Wembley.

Elsewhere, Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice from the spot to earn Portugal a 2-2 draw against France as both sides sail into the last 16.

Ronaldo, 36, became the joint international top scorer of all-time after the brace, matching Ali Daei’s 109 goals scored for Iran.

Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema also scored a brace for France – including a penalty – as the tournament favourites advance to take on Switzerland in the last 16.

Portugal will do battle with world no 1 Belgium for a place in the last eight.
