Director Reveals Rachel McAdams Turned Down ‘ The Devil Wears Prada Role’ Three Times

The 2006 box office hit, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ secured Anne Hathaway’s place in Hollywood but Rachel McAdams was actually the choice actor for studio executives.

During the virtual 15-year reunion with cast and crew members of the movie, David Frankel, director of the film revealed that 20th Century Fox execs wanted McAdams to play the lead role.

McAdams however turned down the role three times before the studio moved on to audition other actors.

“The studio was very determined to have Rachel star in that movie,” Frankel said during the online gathering. “And she was very determined not to do it.”

During a February episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Anne Hathaway revealed she wasn’t second choice either. She was the ninth choice to play the character of the overworked assistant, Andy Sachs.

“It spoke to me. It made me feel. It was about a subject that I take very seriously, but in such a wonderfully joyful and lighthearted way,” Hathaway said of her character.

During the reunion, Hathaway stated that she knew the role would put her on the map.

“I just kind of knew that it was the place to be, so I very patiently waited until it was my turn, and I got the call. It was the easiest yes in the world,” Hathaway said during the reunion.

In fact, Meryl Streep, who famously portrayed Miranda Priestly, had a hand in helping Hathaway secure the part. She suggested Anne Hathaway to the studio.

Meryl had seen her co-star’s small role in ‘Brokeback Mountain’ and was impressed. She met with her and called up Tom Rothman at Fox and said, ‘Yeah, this girl’s great, and I think we’ll work well together.’ “

Frankel said the possibility of a sequel was briefly discussed, but the decision was ultimately thwarted.
