Breaking: IPOB appoints new commander for Eastern Security Network

Proscribed separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Sunday says the Eastern Security Network (ESN) has got a new commander.

The development comes bare 24 hours after a combined team of the Nigeria Police Force, Army and State Security Service (DSS) in a joint operation stormed the operational headquarters of ESN in Awomama Village, Orlu East Local Government Area of Imo state, killing Commander Ikonso and six members of the group.

Speaking on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme, IPOB Secretary, Emma Powerful declined to make the replacement’s name public while denying ESN’s involvement in Saturday’s attack on Governor Hope Uzodinma’s residence.

“ESN are not the ones that attacked Uzodinma’s house. They cannot come for an operation and tell you they are ESN,” Powerful said, adding that ESN was simply set up to “pursue Fulani herdsmen from the region.”

Asked to comment on the newly instituted security outfit by the South East governors, ‘Ebubeagu’, Powerful said, “They are a ghost security outfit. There is no group like Ebubeagu.”

Meanwhile, Imo State – the hub of IPOB activities in the south-east – continues to be on the edge over the killing of Ikonso and IPOB’s threat of retaliation.

Governors in the region on Sunday condoled with their Imo State counterpart, Hope Uzodinma over the burning of his country home and warned that perpetrators would be brought to book.
