United States President Joe Biden on Thursday announced the expulsion of 10 Russian diplomats amid stiffer new sanctions being slapped on the Vladimir Putin-led Kremlin.
The US president disclosed that the drastic measure was in response to Russia’s interference in last year’s US presidential election as well as the hacking of its federal government agencies.
The sanctions are meant to cut deeper than previous efforts imposed by former president Barrack Obama to punish Russia for interfering in elections, targeting the country’s sovereign debt, experts say.
The move is expected to worsen diplomatic relations between the two nuclear powers amid an escalation of rhetoric over Russia’s role in the situation in Ukraine.
Biden has vowed to take tougher measures against Moscow – a massive deviation from the more conciliatory tone of his predecessor Donald Trump.
