El Chapo’s wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, may be sentenced up to four years in prison for drug trafficking and money laundering charges.
According to CBS News, a request was put in by the the Department of Justice which asked for this sentencing. Also, prosecutors have requested that she serve five years of supervised release and pays a fine of $1.5 million.
This comes five months after she pleaded guilty to the three charges. She was arrested for international drug trafficking charges in February at Virginia’s Dulles International Airport.
At the time of her guilty plea, her attorney, Jeffrey Lichtman said that the mother hoped to be with her daughters again. “This is an arm’s length plea agreement,” he said. “She’s happy to take responsibility … to get on with her life.”
Complex adds: “The 32-year-old was allegedly the intermediary between El Chapo and his colleagues. Prosecutors also say she previously helped the 64-year-old drug lord escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. She married El Chapo in 2007, and the couple shares twin girls.”
