Julio Tavares scored in first-half stoppage time as Cape Verde edged 10-man Ethiopia 1-0 win in the second Group A game of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.
The game top off to an explosive start but in the 12th minute, Ethiopia were reduced to 10-men after Yared Baye was issued a red card for a foul play on a Cape Verde player following VAR review.
After long spells of pressure, Cape Verde eventually took the lead in the 45th minute through a close-range header from Julio Tavares.
The Blue Sharks had numerous half-chances to extend their lead, but Ethiopia’s goalkeeper, Teklemariam Shanko proved a formidable wall.
Victory takes Cape Verde up to three points – level with host nation Cameroon – who had earlier downed Burkina Faso 2-1.
