Nigeria Drop to 50th on Fifa Ranking Despite Impressive Displays

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have dropped nine places to 50th on the monthly Fifa world rankings released Thursday, Nov 23. It’s the biggest drop for the Eagles since Gernot Rohr took charge of the team after the freefall experienced under erstwhile coach Sunday Oliseh.

The massive fall on the rankings also comes as a surprise given the Eagles’ impressive showing during the November international break.

Having already punched a ticket for the 2018 World Cup, a much-changed Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw in Algeria, before they demolished former no 1 ranked team, Argentina in a high-profile friendly in Krasnodar, Russia.

The team was largely expected to soar on the rankings on the back of their rampant form, but alas, the reverse was the case as they’ve now plunged to 50th in the world, behind the likes of Greece, Montenegro and Cameroon who failed to make the Russia party.

According to Fifa, Nigeria amassed 671 ranking points in November, a 50-point drop from the 721 points attained in October.

This puts Nigeria eighth on the continent, behind Senegal, Tunisia, Egypt, Congo DR, Morocco, Burkina Faso and African champions Cameroon.

Reigning world champions Germany retain their position as the no 1 ranked side on the planet, with Brazil, Portugal, Argentina and Belgium completing an unchanged top five.

The latest Fifa ranking would undoubtedly ramp up the debates about the entire process after Nigeria was seeded in pot four for the World Cup draws coming next month.

Many were of the opinion that it wasn’t a true reflection of the country’s position in the world game, seeing as former world champions Spain also found themselves in pot 2.

The next ranking will be released on December 21.
